How
Nurse Mommy Came to be…
Welcome weary-eyed Mommies! My name is Stacey Hatton. I am a pediatric nurse (RN), mommy of two preschool girls, and a freelance writer hailing from the absolute center-point of our country, Kansas City. Yes, the ever-entertaining and stimulating heartland and mecca of fun is where I park my computer and call home. I worked as a “kiddo” nurse for 10 years and decided I needed to stay at home with my precocious, yet fabulous, children to write in my spare time. SPARE TIME! Are you kidding me?! What was I thinking?
So at the beginning of 2009, I shifted plans a bit, and I sent them off to preschool. When the kids are outta the house, Mama gets to write! Now I can combine my greatest loves…kids, health, and comedy writing! So this is how blog “Nurse Mommy Laughs…” came to be.
Pre-Nurse and Mommy:
I grew up in Lawrence, KS which is 30 minutes outside of Kansas City, where I currently reside. It may seem as if I didn’t stray far from home, but that is not so.
Finishing my Bachelors in Theatre and Film from the University of Kansas, with a minor in vocal performance, I decided to move to NYC and make a “go” of it. After enjoying a full career in musical theatre, traveling the world performing with various troupes and shows, I decided to return to the homeland (KS) and stop living out of a suitcase.
Since I had already lived a successful showbiz life, I wanted to actually make some money, so I obtained my nursing degree, naively thinking that a life in pediatric nursing would be fulfilling for me. I worked as a nurse in KC for ten years and realized it wasn’t my calling. I loved the patients and the families, but really wanted to spend time with them and get to know them, rather than focus on the medical side of it. I’m a people person, but my healing powers are only through my humor and that wasn’t going to cut it in a pediatric hospital. Thankfully, my husband agreed with me and was able to grant me the freedom to retire from nursing and focus on my comedy and health writing and be my Sugar Daddy!
Currently, I am writing health/parenting articles for KC Parent Magazine and KC Baby (quarterly) Magazine. They have commissioned me to write for them monthly in the “Healthy Kids” section of both magazines. It’s a great gig! I also have several children’s picture books out to publishers and various children’s stories and poems waiting for approval from kidlit magazines.
My newest venture is I have been writing humor commentary articles monthly for the metro newspaper, “The Kansas City Star.” This is my true passion and clearest “voice” and I hope to continue to write for them and perhaps in the near future, reach a larger audience. I am working on a book which is a compilation of my mommy blogs and nurse stories and am searching for a publishing house. Let me know if you hear of anyone interested!
Glad you joined my site, and please sign up for emails and a Facebook friend (nurse mommy laughs)!
